Lalu Prasad Yadav Sets Off Marked Protests With His Cheap Jibes At Nitish Kumar
This maverick and marauding scam tainted politician was once the acolyte of Lok Nayak Jayprakash Narayan. Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has burnt many bridges in his meteoric rise in politics. A stormy petrel, indicted for five scams, served jail term and is now out on a bail. He is once again in the news for his below-the-belt remark against his bete noire, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar who recently announced a Mahila Samvad Yatra to interact directly with women and evaluate the impact of his government’s programme targeted for women. When the media quizzed the RJD supremo Lalu about Nitish Kumar’s Mahila Yatra and his goal of winning all 225 seats in the forthcoming Assembly elections, the unstoppable motor mouth said, “Pahle unko aankh sekhne do” (let them get an eyeful of the women). Lalu is famous for double entendres and pithy talk. This chintzy, low end hit at both Nitish’s party and the women electorate set off a storm. Bihar deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha said, “It seems Lalu Prasad has lost his ability to comprehend, doesn’t know what he is saying “. JDU MP from Munger, Rajiv Ranjan Singh said, “Lalu is master of buffoonery”. Public discourse is an amalgam of many such talents. But certainly hitting below the belt and indulging in such loose talk shows the lack of grace and polish.

Will Aadhav Arjuna, Son-In-Law Of Lottery King Pose A Threat To Udhayanidhi And Vijay In TN Politics?
There are some undeniable advantages that give a leg up for climbing the beanstalk creeper of politics. Forty two year old Aadav Arjuna has many such born to and attained credits. He is tall, lives in Poes Garden, has a commanding personality, son-in-law of the fabled lottery king Santiago Martin, President of the Basketball Federation of India, part of the core team of election strategist Prashant Kishor and close to V Sabareesan, son in law of CM MK Stalin. This Arjuna is loaded, a walking asset. And of course the perfect alchemist for controversy. So when he walked into Thol Thirumavalavan’s VCK as a general secretary, it raised many eyebrows.  And he too raised several controversial issues. One such was his open statements about Tamil Nadu on monarch rule, especially after Udhayanidhi Stalin became deputy CM, raising the shackles of many that the party was run as a family fiefdom. Arjuna’s daily barbs and challenging the establishment could no longer be ignored. Udhayanidhi was riled up as Arjuna was in the VCK party, a significant ally of the DMK. And then the crowning heresy unfolded in an event co-organised by TN’s well known media house, the Vikatan Group and Arjuna’s “Voice of Commons”, in which the just minted, yet another social messiah, actor Vijay (TVK) was the chief guest. Vijay openly commented that in such an event for Dr BR Ambedkar, the absence of VCK’s Thiruma was notable. . And Vijay went on to welcome Aadav Arjuna for a great common cause, Dr Ambedkar. Is Vijay Trying To Wean VCK Chief Thirumavalavan Away From The DMK Alliance?
Tamil superstar turned politician Vijay while attending a book launch to pay tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar was surprised to note that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan was missing from the scene. Vijay while speaking at the event said, “Knowing his commitment to the cause and ideology of Dr Ambedkar, Thiruma is not one to stay away…but he must be under tremendous pressure in his alliance to keep away. I know his heart is with us, and I can understand his compulsion.” In one strike, Vijay exposed the vulnerable flanks of all…DMK’s looming clout to keep the alliance glued, Thiruma waiting for an opportune chance to jump ship and Vijay himself wanting to break existing brotherhoods. When journalists asked Thiruma for his comment, he lashed out saying “I have 25 years of political savvy and sagacity. No one can pressurise me. My body and soul are both with the alliance. Yet, I have no issues with Vijay coming to politics and speaking his lines.” But one should not politicise issues like sharing or not sharing a stage. Then why was Aadav Arjun, VCK’s newly minted disc jockey seen at the event? Thiruma was quick with his repartee…he represents a movement, “Voice of Common”, could have attended on those credentials. Meanwhile, the grand alliance under the DMK umbrella must be on red alert to spot Trojans, and seismic shakes.

Strange Request: Tamil Film Producers Seek Gag Order On Film Reviews For The First Three Days After Release
The latest petition from the Tamil Film Producers’ Association, is perplexing. Justice S Sounthar refused to grant an interim stay adding that film criticisms are part of freedom of speech and expression that cannot be curtailed. It’s not hard to delve into why this gag order is sought legally. The recent disaster of Kanguva at the box office is probably the reason for this drastic demand. High stakes and high jinx political grandstanding. The sop…journos are invited for a press show before the release either in a preview theatre or regular ones. And the press note gives the synopsis, star cast etc. The reviews in print or digital are read by people who decide — given today’s looming OTT presence — whether they want to see it or wait for a week or two. …it seems most decide to wait. Amaran is yet to debut on OTT….5th December after much demand. Because the film is still running to decent shows not managed by incentives Amaran came quietly with a feel good heart touching theme all could relate to. Kanguva thundered “Audience will lap it up. Open mouthed”. We rest our case.

Popular Tamil Film Stars Suriya-Jyotika Take To Temple Runs
A few weeks back, Tamil star Jyotika took her public role seriously and advised her adoring fans, “Why put money in temple Hundis. Instead, use that for buying books and helping poor students”. But if this statement is made onstage in Thanjavur, with a big temple looming over you like a colossus, worshippers are bound to react. Netizens came down heavily on her. The family, including father -in-law, veteran actor Sivakumar have been in the crossfire of late for their alleged atheist stance. Looks like Karma, according to believers, was just waiting to bring her down. After much hype and hoopla, husband Suriya’s movie Kanguva, made with Rs 350 crore released to negative publicity, barely squeaking through Rs 120 crore revenue. Jyotika and Suriya, were left devastated with this box office disaster to their home production. No wonder, every podcast and filmi news picked up the trail of Suriya and Jyotika last week, as they visited four big temples in seven days. Why the sudden change to religion? Some wags say that an astrologer advised them to seek redemption for their “anti-God” views. Kanguva’s failure was the divine wages of sin. At Tirupathi, Jyotika happily posed for pictures with the hoi polloi. It was the couple’s puja for Suriya’s 45th film at Pollachi Masani Amman temple that went viral. In a society that is driven by the alchemy of religion and politics, even cinema has to heed the environment. Megabucks drive art, and art is driven by public sentiments.

Is Chennai Emerging As The Next Frontier For Global Corporation?
According to a recent report by CBRE, an American commercial space and investment firm, Chennai ranks #3 after Bengaluru #1 and Hyderabad # 2. The report titled: TN, The Next Frontier For Global Corporations says, a whopping 12-13 million sq ft of premium office space is set to be added to Chennai’s existing plush offices by 2025 and 2026. For global money to flow in, the report says the GCC index is critical. Tamil Nadu has developed many Global Capability Centres. Chennai boasts of over 250 such GCC’s currently and the plans to hit 460 by 2030. The most developed GCC centres are on OMR, Mount Poonamallee and PT Road accounting for 92% of the commercial leasing space.  Chennai has grown from 1.4 million sq ft ready to move in office & commercial space in 2022 to 2.3 million sq ft in just nine months of 2024. American firms accounted for 67% of this GCC capability. At the global summit meeting held in Chennai some time back, the Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin said that his government’s aim is to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Now with a strong focus on developing AI capability, both as learning/teaching and application. TN at $ 300 billion is all set to turn into a South Indian Tiger economy, a status held by Hong Kong, UAE.

Now, Celebrity Weddings Shot As Films For Eager Audience
December 4th is a red letter day for the Hyderabadi glitterati. Nag Chaitanya and Shobhita Dhulipala are to solemnise their marriage at a lavish ceremony to be held at the Annapoorna Studios, the Akkineni family’s heritage studio named after the late Akkineni Nageswara Rao’s wife. Sentiment, scale, spend and super social event to mark this second wedding of 38-year old Nag Chaitanya, divorced from Samantha Ruth Prabhu in 2021. The talk is that 32-year old Shobitha has been gifted specially woven Kanjivaram saree and choli in gold lace and stunning jewellery befitting the Akkineni family. The ceremony is to run over 8 hours. The big buzz is that this gala event’s filming and exhibition rights have been sold to Netflix for Rs 50 crore! Rings a bell? Nayanthara and Vignesh Sivan’s wedding event and its OTT telecast. Even as the camera greedily laps up the stunning costumes and staggering jewellery on display, the long line of filmi invitees waiting to pose in their boast worthy bling are on view. And OTT streamers have their own original edited content. And the families earn back the money spent on the weddings. Business Schools have yet to teach this ROI. The only troubling thought …after all this, why are divorces taking place so often? Even as Nag Chaitanya and Shobitha Dhulipala soon to be streamed wedding events are making news, Dhanush and Aishwarya Rajinikanth are given the family court’s verdict. Divorced.

Dhanush Slaps Nayanthara With Rs 10-Crore Notice For 3-Second Clip
The Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan wedding in 2022 was much talked about, kindled oodles of curiosity and news. Okay, Nayan is known as the Lady Superstar of Kollywood and this couple were newsmakers for a long time …speculations and guesswork rife over whether it was yet another Nayan dalliance in her longline of ditched paramours Prabhudeva, Simbu in that list. Finally the wedding was celebrated with pomp and style, Netflix signed a deal for OTT rights at an astronomical figure, no one could corroborate. Then, all concerned moved on … .Nayan is now mother to two cute boys. The wedding footage and other highlights of Nayan’s films were curated to make a biopic, Nayanthara, Beyond The Fairy Tale, and it went OTT live with many expectations that it would hit the high jinx for Nayan…actually it has not garnered much praise. But the Fairy Tale turned into a Horror Story when she was slapped with a notice to pay Rs 10 crore for a 3-second clip from her movie Naanum Rowdy Thaan, a hit movie from Dhanush’s home production. Nayan was livid. Adding insult to injury, Dhanush further insisted that the clip be deleted immediately. Currently Dhanush is directing Idli Kadai produced by Akash Bhaskar. His recent wedding attended by Sivakarthikeyan, Anirudh, Dhanush and Nayanthara, husband in tow turned viral worthy … .the angry vibes both conveyed made news. The protagonists were sitting poles apart and faces turned away. Karma, it is said, has a way of punching holes in egos.

With Small Budget Films Raking Big Money, Kollywood May Rethink About Multi-Star Cast Model
Tamil film producers and their financial backers are now rethinking this model — big money, big stars, big projects but no guarantee that it will reap profits. So the new strategy…safe and secure than spend thrift and sorry. Can small budget films do big business? A resounding yes to three of 2024s baby budget films that warmed the cockles of producers’ hearts. Three films of this year, Lover, Lubber Pandhu and Vaazhai have pulled in amazing profits and massive margins. Lover’s budget was a mere Rs 5 crore, and plus other expenses added the total cost to Rs 6 crore. Hold your breath! It made a profit of Rs 13 crore. But Lubber Pandhu (Rubber Ball), a title that would have gone unnoticed, made the biggest rake in for Prince Pictures who earned Rs 35 crore in TN gross alone — 300% profit. Vaazhai was no sneeze over either…it brought Rs 12 crore profits in TN. Film making costs and exhibition/promo expenses can zoom up dangerously, and after paying the incredible star salaries, if the film’s overflow is modest, stakeholders have no insurance cover to fall back on. Small is big is fast becoming the new open sesame for Kollywood to stay safe.

Suriya’s Kanguva Faces Public Backlash Post His Comment On Temple Spends By Devotees
Popular Tamil star Suriya’s much-awaited Kanguva said to be made at a cost of Rs 200 crore faced public wrath. Suriya had done intense promos and marketing even claiming that the film would rake in Rs 2000 crore. The most cringeworthy claim was “audience would lap it up, open mouthed”. The first day’s take was pegged at RS.60 crore. In fairness to Suriya those in the know claim that it was just a concerted effort to throw the baby out with the bath water. There were other stars who too had disappointed so why pick on Suriya? For those seeking the truth, Suriya and wife Jyotika had made some public utterances about religious worship …why spend money in temples and other religious places? Why not use that money to help underprivileged kids to get educated? There is talk that the family moved to Mumbai from Chennai in order to seek better career prospects and make the home production company more profitable. Interesting to note that there were claims and memes by the prickly audience asking Suriya “you could have spent Rs 200 crore on philanthropy. But no, you wanted to spin it to Rs 2,000 crore”. No one is sure till now whether Kanguva is a rotten tomatoes failure or it would survive the vicious backlash. But a leading Tamil magazine Vikatan in its review has appropriately summed it up …”Suriya set out to save the Truth. But who is going to save Kanguva’s weak script”. There is a saying in Hindi, Ek Chup, Sau Sukh. Discretion is the better part of valour.

Is Udhayanidhi Showing Signs Of Mellowing Down?
He has been very vocal on sanatan dharma and has been taking potshots at BJP and Hindu religion. But ever since Udhayanidhi Stalin was appointed deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu he seems to have toned down his anti-sanatan stand. Of course, he has shown his aggressive side by insisting on wearing a T shirt with DMK logo on it at every public appearances, a practice that has irked opposition to the extent of filing legal action. This defiance is yet to be resolved. But there is evidence that he is mellowing down, a visible change from his aggressive defiance. Recently, Udhayanidhi was tasked with completing a full audit and stock taking of the DMK government’s welfare schemes and doles obviously aimed at the 2026 Assembly elections. To get a first hand report Udhayanidhi visited several constituencies, met the local party workers and government officials. But when he visited Thoothukudi with Minister for Fisheries Anita Radhakrishnan and Social Welfare minister Gita Jiwan in tow, the powerful and bespoke Kalaignar family’s Kanimozhi( MP for that constituency ) was missing from the scene. The media was quick to pounce on this glaring absence. Udhayanidhi was quick to reassure the media that this stock taking move and audit had been undertaken at the request of the chief minister and that his foster aunt was travelling abroad. He also took pains to reassure the media that he would revisit Thoothukudi in a few weeks with Kanimozhi. There was a time when Udhayanidhi would have flared up at even an indirect reference to Kanimozhi’s relevance. Times are changing

How Vidya Balan Lost And Won
Vidya Balan struck Bollywood like a tornado in Parineeta having debuted in 2003 with a Bengali film Bhale Thaco …this South Indian star raved by audiences for her acting and beauty struck a chord. Another Hema, Rekha, Padmini, Vyjayantimala? Vidya has her unique magnetism and left behind her signature in every role. Then it happened …actually it had been building up kilo by kilo …her weight gain overshadowed all else. Though she faced body shaming with determination, even as she claimed that she had overwhelming hormonal issues. But in a super charged fashion and style world where the Manish Malhotras and Tarun Tahilianis who designed for super trim beauties, Vidya had to regain her trim figure. And you know how she lost weight, leading to OMG gasps and wonderment? As stylishly as she handled an on stage fall, oops moment while performing a dance number with Madhuri Dixit for the promo of Bhool Bhulaiya 3. Even as Vidya performed intricate Bharata Natyam steps, she just fell…and raised herself stylishly and carried on, almost as if it was a dance move. Vidya now basks in admiration for her weight loss which was through the diet change that she credits — Anura, a health center that helped her to identify her particular “inflammation” prone body response to sluggish metabolism. The born again Vidya is chirpy and cheerful and fans are going to see a lot more of the new Vidya.

Actor Vijay Rally’s Effect: Now, DMK Plans Massive Show On Udhayanidhi‘s 47th Birthday
The entry of super star Vijay into politics seems to have shaken the foundations of several political parties in Tamil Nadu. Every political party in TN pivoted 360 degrees –how would it affect their fortunes? Ironically, the November issue of India Today published India’s Power Pantheon list of the 20 most power wielding politicians … .and guess what, TN chief minister MK Stalin is ranked 8th after PM Narendra Modi, Mohan Bhagwat, Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi and others. Despite Stalin’s ideological speak not reaching pan India, he has made his voice heard in the power echelons of Delhi, with 22 Lok Sabha MPs, 10 Rajya Sabha MPS, having won all 39 constituencies in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls cornering 70% vote share. Now this is the kind of power that Vijay wants to move and shake with his just minted outfit. Vijay himself a green horn with ambitions of turning into a second MGR who made history challenging Stalin’s father the late Kalaignar by founding the AIADMK. Without naming Vijay, Stalin said in his recent meet at his constituency, Kolathur, anybody can start a party and claim lofty status. But it needs years of experience and powerful DNA. As a counter to Vijay’s rally where 3 lakh plus people showed up, it is learnt that Stalin has asked DMK workers to make his son’s Udhayanidhi’s birthday on 27th November unforgettable by organizing a massive youth rally. Clearly, it is sending out a message to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam that the DMK means business.
Amaran
Amaran’s Impressive First Day Collection Raises Kamal Haasan’s Emotional Quotient
It’s a tricky tightrope walk when a true life event and sacrifice is transferred on to the medium of cinema … .the creation has to more than match the extraordinary bravery of an army Major, his supreme sacrifice and the family’s sorrow filled pride in him. Kamal Haasan and his Raaj Kamal Films International production house has hit the high emotional spot with Sivakarthikeyan as Amaran. The film, applauded by both audience and critics, raked in Rs 42.3 crore worldwide on Day One. And deservingly. Amaran is the rendition of late Major Mukund Varadarajan leading the Rajasthan Rifles in Shopian, who fell to terrorist bullets while defending his team and the country –he was just 31. Even as people exited the cinemas, many were shedding tears and paying heartfelt emotional salaams to this brave son of India. Rajkumar Periasamy, trained in the creative environs of Kamal’s cinema, has done faithful research on the life of Major Mukund, and created his character for compelling screen performances. Sivakarthikeyan, according to Kamal has raised himself to a new cinematic level that is bound to leapfrog his status as an actor. But it is Sai Pallavi, as the hero’s wife Indu Rebecca who has garnered equal admiration as the “iron” army wife who does not shed tears of weakness but carries her head high, saluting her husband’s bravery. Good cinema is still appreciated amidst the cacophony and glitz of mindless offerings aimed at padding up jaded stars.

Kollywood’s Impressive Lineup This Diwali, Which Film Will Gain The Most?
Kollywood has set the trend for many traditions, especially festivals. Diwali tops the list for the Tamilian film buff — crack of dawn oil baths, new clothes finery, gorging on  sweets and savoury, crackers, and of course a must see “film”. Producers too play by this unstoppable sentiment and release their movies on Diwali Day with great expectations about audience storming cinemas and opening their wallets. This year’s line up — Amaran, Brother, Bloody Beggar and Lucky Baskhar are all set to sashay sassily on the ramp and raise hopes for which film gains the most …money wise. Starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi Amaran produced by Kamal Haasan and Sony Pictures International, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy has raised the expectations bar.  Jeyam Ravi has not had much cinematic popularity to talk about after Ponniyin Selvan.  His movie Brother directed by M Rajesh is touted as an all-round entertainer with comedy heading the mix…Harris Jeyaraj has scored the hit number Makkamishi. In the case of Bloody Beggar, an entertainer that hinges on a poor man as an impersonator in a rich man’s mansion. It is backed by Nelson the director of Jailer who has trusted his assistant M Sivabalan to bring the best of acting talent from Kavin seen as the millennial favourite. Perhaps all three films are at best seen as counterfoils to Dulquer Salmaan’s Lucky Baskhar, a Telugu film that has quickly turned out pan India in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. Vaathi fame director Venkat Atluri has directed this film as a period piece.
rn ravi vk singh
Is General VK Singh Replacing Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi?
Is Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi who seems to be having a running battle with the DMK government headed by MK Stalin being replaced? Sources say he may be headed to The Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), the foreign intelligence agency of India. This 1976 Kerala cadre IPS (hometown Bihar) wended his career path through the spooky labyrinths of the CBI and RAW as Additional Security Director, then did a brief stint in Nagaland before being appointed as the Governor of TN. Reams of news, views and ruse have been dedicated in writing about Ravi, his tempestuous relationship with Stalin, his talent for lighting fires when files were sent up for the Governors assent. Stalin’s strategy of “forgive and forget” saw him attending a Tea tete-a-tete at Raj Bhavan. The CM, making it clear hostilities to be contained, even conceded the prickly issue of K Ponmudi, Minister for Education and replaced him with Govindan Nedunchezhian popularly known as Govi Chezhiyan. Now comes the news that BJP’s big wig, former chief of staff VK Singh is on his way to TN as the new governor, to mend fences and sweeten the relationship with the DMK.

Selective Secularism: Madras HC Stops Tamil Nadu Govt’s Plan Of Building A Shopping Complex On Temple Land
Are Hindu places of deep faith and devout worship soft targets for political pillage and desecration? Why are other faith places of worship not dared to be targeted? Secularism is a selective cash cow. After many other such instances of partisan interference, the sacred 9th century Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple built by the Chola kings at the foothills of the revered Thiruvannamalai has now become the target for yet another commercial exploitation. A shopping complex is the ambitious plan. Every year lakhs of pilgrims visit this Lord Shiva temple. The most famous being the full moon night Girivalam, a 13-km trek circumambulating the Hill. The coffers of this place overflow on the festival day of Karthigai Deepam, when the hilltop glows with a massive Jyothi seen for miles. This year, Rs 3.5 crore filled the Hundis in three months. In 2023, TN’s  HR & CE ministry came up with a shocking plan to build a shopping complex right across from the Eastern Rajagopuram of the temple to house 150 shops on temple land, by using Rs 6. 4 crore of temple money. Activist TR Ramesh quickly filed a case to strike down this move to commercially exploit the temple land using temple funds. After a quick hearing the Madras HC Division Bench “directed that all construction activity should stop immediately”. Ramesh of the INDIC Collective Trust has got a reprieve from parties that profess atheism and malign Hindu religion for political mileage but want Hindu devotees’ largesse for their gain.
tamanaah
Which Tamanna is Tamannaah Praying For At Guwahati’s Maa Khamakhya Temple?
This year’s biggest grosser Stree 2 has found its place in the numbers book as pure entertainment riding a spooky plot. This film’s highlight is Tamannaah Bhatia enticing fans with her Aaj ki Raat item number, bringing in repeat audiences just to see her dance. Her earlier film Jailor item number Noovu kaavalaa is still rocking the audience. Tamannaah has her place as a saleable star who raises no controversies, does her work and moves on. But she may not have realised the deep trouble she was getting into by signing on as Brand ambassador for the Mahadev HPZ Token App, which has now become a legal nightmare for its owner Saurabh Chandrakar. His App and role in the alleged illegal broadcast of the IPL competition has turned into a Rs 5000 crore lawsuit, with Viacom claiming Rs 100 crore loss. Tamannaah is alleged to be part of the promos and events and now the ED is determined to question all those connected with the scam. Travelling to Guwahati with her parents, the ravishing film star was subjected to 5 hours of questioning. It is not known how this captivating lady withstood the ED grilling (or how the ED faced her voltage). But her visit to the famous Mahashakti’s Tantric power temple of Kamakhya, dressed in a white kurta accompanied by her parents, made more news.
lady justice
Image Makeover For Lady Justice At The Supreme Court, But What About 51 Million Pending Cases
The Chief Justice of India has inspired and installed a brand new Lady Justice in the SC library, in an effort to bin many a vestige of British colonialism. The just sculpted Lady Justice is as Indian as she can get…she wears a bindi, bangles and strongly resembles Goddess Saraswati. The makeover immediately flashes memories of how justice was strongly and tellingly portrayed in our films with titles like Andha Kanoon, Insaaf ka Tarazu in Hindi, Sattam Oru Iruttu Arai (law is a dark room) in Tamil. The stark inequalities and systemic interpretation of class, gender and caste that torment society were portrayed as the “interpretation” of the law by the Lady Justice, blindfolded, holding a weighing scale in her right hand and a sword in her left. These symbols were meant to convey an impartial system that did not discriminate, and one that meted out punishment, swiftly. The new symbol is significant in keeping with the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita replacing the old, the saree clad Lady Justice has no blindfold and the Indian Constitution replaces the sword as a revered Tome in her left hand. She strongly resembles Devi Saraswati from the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma or from the Pooja idols of Kolkata’s Kumartuli. But mere intent to clean up colonial cobwebs is not enough. With 51 million cases clogging the judicial system, 80,000 in the SC alone, delaying justice delivery in a shocking way, how is the system gearing up for fast redressals and closures?

Even As Heavy Rain Pounds TN, State Liquor Outlets TASMAC To Remain Open
The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has been pounding Tamil Nadu with massive rainfall and flooding. Schools, Colleges and all public institutions are to remain closed with dire warnings of every hue…red, orange alerts to stay indoors and stay safe. But the government in its wisdom is keeping the state-run TASMAC outlets open for thirsty denizens. PMK leader Dr Anbumani Ramdoss has lashed out at the TN government over this move. “Is it life-saving medicine or an essential that the public can’t live without? Is it an intrinsic part of the Dravida model to keep liquor sales open”? asked Anbumani in X. Significantly, Deputy CM, Udhayanidhi Stalin addressed the media even as the MET office warned about the heavy rain conditions to hit and assured that the DMK government was fully prepared to take on the threat of flooding. Having suffered severe losses in the past two cyclone hits with cars inundated, the public quickly resorted to parking cars on the flyover bridges….The Velachery flyover overnight turned into a parking lot. It’s another outrage that the police warned about big fines for such “parking”, adding insult to injury. YouTube podcasts on the rain caused flooding in Poes Garden, the hallowed precinct of power, politics and prestige turned smirk worthy. Ramadoss and his take on keeping TASMAC sales open as part of Dravida governance is seen as justified. Strange are the ways of “ideology” when it is business as usual.

Popular Malayalam Star Jayaram Gives The First Invitation For Son’s Wedding To Tamil Nadu CM
Sixty-year old popular star Jayaram Subramaniam has created a soft and stylish spot for himself in Kerala films despite Mammootty and Mohanlal’s reigning supreme as evergreens. His performance in the hit period drama Ponniyin Selvan (as Alwar Kadian Nambi, the articulate comic Brahmin) was as much the highlight of this epic drama as the pivotal characters of Ponni and Karikala  Chozhan. His 26-year old son Kalidas Jayaram has created a niche for himself in the film industry. Recently he was cast in the Dhanush film Raayan, and showed his mettle in the Tamil OTT anthology Pava Kadaigal in which he played a transgender. Kalidas is all set to marry Tarini Kalingarayan, a former Miss Tamil Nadu 2019, well known model and alumnus of MOP Vaishnav College. Jayaram and wife Parvathy had just celebrated daughter Malavika’s wedding in grand style , and it came as no surprise that they announced Kalidas ‘ wedding  too in quick succession. The only surprise was that Jayaram, Parvathy and Kalidas honoured MK Stalin, TN CM with the first invite. Not surprising it created a buzz as why had he not given the first invitation to the Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan? In the world of politics and cinema events occur not according to the logic of mundane society. Celebrities have their own exalted status or political predilections. Superstar Mammootty’s son Dulquer Salmaan’s was an arranged marriage in 2011 to Amal Sufiya whose family is from North India. Mohan Lal’s son, Pranav Mohanlal’ marriage with Kalyani Priyadarshan has remained an enigmatic topic.

Rajinikanth’s Unexpected Hospitalisation And Clouds Of Surmises
Ace Tamil film director Lokesh Kanakaraj currently directing Rajinikanth’s 171st movie Coolie, is a hunted man trying his utmost to convince the crazed Super star fans that he was in no way responsible for Thalaiva’s sudden illness. Rajini had just completed a 40-day stint for Coolie at Vizag. He was taken ill with belly pain and unease, immediately rushed to the Apollo Hospital, Chennai where a team of top cardiologists and other consultants took charge. Rajini came home after a stent was put and advised rest for three weeks. The Tamil media spelt the stent as “stunt” in their news bulletins. In any other 73-year old, it would just pass off as an age related issue and not unusual. (Rajini has a transplanted kidney and was on immune suppressants). Here we are talking of a phenomenon who reigns over a huge legion of fans who go crazy just for a glimpse. So the overwhelming vigil outside the hospital was expected, happening every time a political VIP/celebrity gets into Apollo. Not just the media but the hundreds of me too YouTubers floated opinions, prayers, surmises and misplaced criticism of the director Kanakaraj. Various theories floated around and blame was pinned on the director. With Vettaiyan set to release on October 10 and mega marketing promos needed, Rajini had much to deal with. The talk was that he was paid Rs 100 crore while Big B paid Rs 7 crore ( for guest appearance ). Vettaiyan could benefit from the huge publicity generated by Thalaiva.

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Elevation: Calm Before The Storm?
Immediately after his ascension to the TN throne as Deputy CM, Udhayanidhi Stalin did the mandatory optic-filled rounds of feet touching of elders in the party, seeking their blessings. He did not ignore Rajathi Ammal, his second grandmother and his aunt Kanimozhi. The usual platitudes and well-wishing congratulations were extended. But wagging tongues continued to rustle up a huge stir of debate, debunking the obvious…that all is well in Stalin’s family and Kalaignar’s extended family, that Udhayanidhi was an inch away from the top seat of TN, and that Stalin had a firm grip over Party, Government and challengers. Stalin himself had gone through this gambit when his father had to sideline an impetuous, mercurial second son MK Alagiri and choose younger son Stalin. The buzz became very real when Kanimozhi posted on her Insta juxtaposed with a photo of her late Dad, “Appa I miss you, though you are always with me “. Just the kind of wet earth needed to sprout a thousand conjectures. Senior Journalist Tamizha Tamizha Pandian in his no punches spared interview said, “After Karunanidhi, Stalin, Kanimozhi and then Udhayanidhi are in the succession line. But Stalin chose to elevate his son, missing the next in line Kanimozhi”.  Note, the deputy CM tag was conferred, but no change in portfolio –he still is Sports Minister. Kanimozhi won’t rock the palace intrigues boat, now says Pandian and adds that it may perhaps happen when Udhayanidhi steps into his father’s shoes. At that point, Kani may stake her claim… the party could split with the old guard supporting her.

What’s It About Samantha That Makes Her A Soft Target?
Thirty-seven year old Samantha Ruth Prabhu was married to Nag Chaitanya, Telugu film’s enduring star Nagarajuna’s son for just 4 years before the couple filed for divorce in 2021. Already Nag Chaitanya’s closeness to fast rising Shobhita Dhulipalia is buzzing around. But it is Samantha who has been hit the hardest in the past few years, despite her rise to stardom in both Tamil and Telugu films. The OTT series Family Man brought her much acclaim. But her personal life was hit in a serious way when she was diagnosed with myositis, a medical condition that has punched her psyche hard, understandably. But Samantha was not prepared for the latest turbulence in her life…Telangana Minister for Environment and Forestry, Konda Surekha recently made downright derogatory remarks about the cause of Samantha’s divorce ….alleging that BRS leader KT Rama Rao is the cause for the rift and divorce. Surekha further insinuated that this BRS leader has a knack of intervening and interfering in the lives of celebrities. Telugu cineworld has erupted in anger at this kind of malicious loose talk, and superstars Chiranjeevi, Allu Arjun, Jr.NTR, Nagarajuna have condemned the Congress leader for this unsavoury talk. KTR of course has warned this minister to apologise immediately and retract her slanderous allegation or face a defamation case. The Minister has tended an instant apology on X, especially to Samantha that she had no intention of dragging her into the muck…she just wanted to vent her venom on politicians for their derogatory attitude to women. Samantha may be rueing her bad times…stars too have to cope with Star struck times.

Meiyazhagan: An Overnight Bus Ride That Makes For Amazing Cinema
The oft debated question, can meaningful cinema entertain? Or intended pure entertainment be meaningful?  Suriya and Jyotika’s home production 2 D Entertainment‘s  just released Meiyazhagan is sure to raise this debate all over again till the next Mega extravagant film comes along to zap film buffs with the scale of spend. Director Premkumar has taken 6 long years after the super success of 96, a Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi led, literally one night stand when they meet and relive their now ended love story. Meiyazhagan is the one night story of Arulmozhi( Arvind Swami in a riveting, unforgettable performance ) who travels home in the Needamangalam bus, to his native village from where he was unexpectedly hounded out when his ancestral home was willed to his sisters. The trip is made memorable by meeting Karthi the hail fellow well met, cheer and bonhomie maker.  Malayalam cinema’s “almost there” super star Tovino Thomas feels Meiyazhagan is the leitmotif of meaningful cinema that touches viewers and lingers as emotional super glue. Arvind Swami and Karthi share the powerful impact of a common story that appeals in uncommon ways. Incidentally, Karthi, still under the spell of his role as influencer was an inch away from trouble. At a press meet for movie’s promotion, he was asked about the Tirupati Laddu issue. In his usual way he tried humour. Pawan Kalyan came down heavily on his flippant attitude and soon Karthi had to apologise. Sensible otherwise, the Telugu version of Meiyazhagan would have suffered.
Simran Bagga
Don’t Link Me To Top Actors, Says Tamil Film Heroine Simran Bagga
After a noteworthy career as a Tamil Film heroine from 1995 to 2005, Simran Bagga is happily settled in Gurgaon with her husband and children. When she is offered a role she accepts but in her own words “I don’t hanker after roles as co-star to top heroes,” insisting she is content with her achievements in South films having worked with all leading heroes — Vijay, Suriya, Ajit and others. She was referred to as “Slimran” a compliment given by her directors and media for her slim figure and pleasant looks. There were the usual stories that were cooked up to add Masala to her film promotions. But the recent media stories linking her to Vijay especially that she asked Vijay if he would agree to work in her production have lit much anger in her. Vijay is supposed to have turned down her offer, claiming “my movies always roll with controversy…I can’t say from where the problems come.” Simran is aghast that such a claim is making the rounds. “STOP this kind of loose talk, linking me to top actors. I value my self-esteem and self-respect.” From her first Tamil film Nerukku Ner, through many a hit with Ajit and Vijay, Simran has traversed a steady career. And would like to be left out of controversy, not of her making.
TN BJP
Are Bush Fires Being Lit In Tamil Nadu BJP Unit?
On September 21, the BJP’s Tamil Nadu band of officiating coordinators committee members were suddenly invited for a breakfast meeting by KT Raghavan, former BJP leader, on behalf of the Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The venue was not Kamalalayam, TN‘s BJP centre but Indian Bank’s Guest House at MRC Nagar. It may be known that BJP Destiny’s Favourite K Annamalai, is out of action as he is away in London to attend a fellowship on leadership offered by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office. Yet, Annamalai’s unseen presence loomed large over the meeting. The recent GST imbroglio that took place in Coimbatore when Annapoorna Srinivasan(president of the Hotelier’s Association) spoke candidly about the different GST rates on sweet, savoury and coffee and the need for rationalisation. Later retracted, asked for a meeting to apologise, and this entire incident went viral. Even as Srinivasan slipped into embarrassment, Annamalai called him to apologise for the unsavoury incident. The BJP’s vulnerability stood exposed. Was this parallel power centre deliberate? Sources close to BJP says that 2026 TN Assembly polls may see a major “manthan” in the BJP TN hierarchy.

Now, DMK Issues Veiled Threat To Alliance Partner VCK
Recently, DMK Chief and Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin was nettled by the strong announcement by its enduring ally Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s (VCK) supremo Thol Thirumavalavan hinting at sharing in power. Upbeat about the planned Women’s meet where 35,000 women voters would attend and endorse the need for prohibition in TN, Thirumavalavan could sense Stalin’s discomfort and the need for fire-fighting. Hardly had this threat perception cooled down, then Stalin faced sabre-rattling from VCK’s defiant deputy secretary Aadav Arjun plain speaking about dynasty power. Said Aaadav Arjun, “In just 4 years of transition  from cinema to politics, a person is ready  to don the deputy CM ‘s mantle, our leader who has 40 years of political experience is more than ready for even the CM post, let alone deputy CM”. This was clearly aimed at Udhayanidhi Stalin, all set to be deputy CM. A quick rebuttal was given by A Raja, DMK MP and family strongman who said that “Looks like some new entrants to VCK are unaware of the ideological ties between us and VCK. Alliances are not mere number games…they endure due to mutual respect and speaking the same language.” A veiled threat was issued. Arjun should retract, and apologise or we may have to rethink about our alliance”. Sources say that VCK is ready to slaughter the lamb in order to keep the status quo. Talk is rife that these fires could well be planned and ignited by a major party….break and make new alliances in the run up 2026.

This ‘Rowdy Baby’ Turns Caring At Sister Pooja Kannan’s Wedding
Sai Pallavi, the actor who has a big fan following for her films, is a doctor by profession. She is also known as one of the best dancers, her hit number with Dhanush “Rowdy Baby” still remembered for its sizzle and sass. For the engagement ceremony of sister Pooja Kannan to Vineet held in January, Sai and Pooja danced to the hit Marathi song “Apsara Ali”, a riot of energy and fun.  But Sai Pallavi turned serious at Pooja Kannan’s wedding, held in true Badaga style in the cool environs of Ooty. The Badagas have unique traditions and culture and weddings too are celebrated in true Badaga style. The bride’s party reaches the grooms place early in the morning for the ceremony, which starts with the “Thali” (mangalsutra) tying at the Hethai Amman temple, then wend their way to the groom’s place for the sumptuous feast, Madhuve Hittu. Sai officiated as the sister bridesmaid at every turn, looking ethereal in a monochrome outfit that matched her sister’s. Sai is soon to be seen as Sita in epic Ramayana with Ranbir Kapoor as Ram …the divine chemistry to unfold the oft told epic story …Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Yash and Vijay Sethupathi are to provide plot movers. Sai also has Amaran with Sivakarthikeyan in the lead.

Veiled Threat By DMK’s Alliance Partner VCK Rattles Stalin
Generally speaking in Tamil Nadu the alliance partners whether of the DMK or AIADMK get itchy and periodically restless then threaten to walk out. So it was not surprising to see Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s (VCK) supremo Thol Thirumavalavan make his stunning move when chief minister MK Stalin was away to the U.S. for a month. Thiruma announced plans to hold the mother of all public meetings on Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2) to hammer home the need for prohibition in TN (where state sells liquor  to the thirsty populace)  and highlight the fast spreading drug menace. Holding a mega meet of over 35, 000 women against liquor, on 8 acres of his venue, bringing women voters from 134 wards to Kallakuruchi. Thiruma cannily invited the AIADMK to join the mammoth meet and share a common platform. But his other demand, more share in power and governance is what shook the ruling DMK, shocking Stalin and his stalwarts Duraimurugan, KN Nehru, AV Velu and Ponmudi. Sure enough Stalin was rattled sufficiently to call Thiruma for an immediate meeting at DMK Anna Arivalayam. Thirumavalavan poured out a litany of woes…his party did not get respect when the party flags had to be put up whereas PMK and even newbie Vijay’s TVK were getting better treatment from the Police. It is not clear which hit Stalin most…Jet lag or Thiruma’s tirade. Muscle flexing seems to be the best optic for alliance partners.

Why Tamil Film’s Popular Star Jayam Ravi Dropped The Divorce Bombshell
Even as film fans across the country are wildly speculating about divorce in the Bachchan’s family comes the news from Kollywood that Jayam Ravi, one of the most dependable performers (the standout star of Ponniyin Selvan) dropped a bombshell on his 44th birthday (Sept 9) that he is seeking divorce from wife Aarti after 15 years of marriage. The couple have two children. A shell shocked Aarti, a successful entrepreneur in her own right, said “Ravi did not consult me, nor was I aware that he is about to drop this bombshell on me and the kids. This unilateral announcement never gave me a chance …much as I tried to talk to him.” Coincidentally, Ravi’s first hit, M.Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi was a film that touched the hearts of many. It is about a single mother who brings up her son with no help from a husband who walked out on the marriage. Ironically, Ravi asking for divorce will see Aarti face a similar predicament. Aarti is the daughter of successful TV serial producer Sujatha Vijayakumar. Has Ravi come to the end of his tether because of perceived interference of his in-law? Inspite of his busy schedule, Ravi has always given quality time for his family says sources. No one is aware of the real reason for Ravi’s ultimate break decision. But the way he has done it made Aarti lament, “My grace and individuality have been knocked out by the media speculations.” She still hopes for a rapprochement. Marriages are made in heaven, but hit the rocks in this fantasy world of tinsel make believe.

Muhammad Kutti Hated His Nickname Mammootty
You say what’s in a name, it is what you make of yourself that finds your name in history. There is at least one mega star who would differ aggressively…actually the very name he shunned turned into the mega brand, loved and idolised. Many have wondered what the name Mammootty meant. For the past 50 odd years, it has shot into global popularity and respect. Mammootty who turned 73 on September 7 was born into a conservative family. His parents Ismail and Fathima ran a modest trade business in clothing and rice in Kerala. Mohammad Kutti, the eldest of their six children, dreamt of getting into films but family pressure saw him graduate from Ernakulam’s Maharaja College and forced him to study law so as to add the prefix Advocate to his name. Wanting to be known as Omar Sharif, the Egyptian killer star, Kutti hated his nickname Mammootty, the abbreviated choice of his friends and family. Now comes the filmy twist. One day the postman knocked on the Advocate’s door, asking “Who is Mammootty…I have a letter from MT Vasudevan Nair of Janasakti Films, addressed to Mammootty”.  The rest is magical cinematic history. Mammootty , christened and chosen by the genius Vasudevan Nair went on to become the tallest Malayalam film star, with 420 films in his bag…a mix of good, bad and passable. In 2000, Mammootty hit the mother lode of four scorching hits —Narasimhan, Valletta, Dada Saheb and Kandukondein Kandukondein. With four National Awards and countless State Awards, at this age Mammootty still causes heart flutters in women. A nickname turned into a legend, and a guaranteed audience draw. Mammootty, destiny’s child is acclaimed by his son Dulquer Salman as a hard act to follow.

Can Superstar Vijay Replicate His Success In Political Theatre?
The pre-release hype and hoopla for top star high budget films are hard to ignore. But Archana Kalpathi, Creative Head of Kalpathi Films has more than swivelled 360 degrees to hit the target for Great Of All Time (GOAT) – superstar Vijay’s penultimate film. The usual suspense about extra shows ended when TN cinemas announced a special 9 am show. Kerala went a step further and had a 4 am show as crazed fans from Coimbatore and state border towns pole-vaulted to Kerala cinemas. The (unofficial) ticket cost of Rs 1000 shot up to 2k. Such is the hold of superstars and the besotted fans…a launch pad for politics that TN stars transit from formula films to politics with ease. Tamil news had snippets of who watched GOAT where …top heroine Trisha watched the movie with Archana, Director Venkat Prabhu preferred Kamala cinema. If the delirium surrounding Vijay was not already palpable, another snippet conveyed that Thala Ajit was one of the first to call, and wished Vijay all the best for his mega hit. The buzz about the AI and De-ageing technology used in the film to differentiate between father Vijay and his son is sure to kindle curiosity. The last few years had a rush of filmi gossip about Vijay’s estranged parents and wife Sangeeta, even son Sanjay’s rebellion. Suddenly, photos of the entire family bonding watching the film at this time were flashed in the media.Vijay’s newly minted party TVK is now planning the mother of all public gatherings to present Vijay as the new messiah of TN. Interestingly, throughout the film, Vijay drives a car with the number plate TN07 CM 2026! Talk about subtlety!

Is Tamil Nadu’s Knitwear & Textile Industry Safe Haven For Illegal Bangladesh Migrants?
Tamil Nadu leads in current headlines. Yes, F4 is what you are thinking. The first family has come a long way from the modest roots of Thiruvarur. Today Stalin Jr is conducting a car race event…you’ve come a long way, baby. But intel reports are pointing out that Bangladesh illegals too have come a long way to escape strife ridden country, seek jobs and livelihood and perhaps turn TN into a state like Kashmir? The Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has warned TN authorities about this increasing penetration by illegals with fake IDs like Aadhaar cards and others. The Dibrugarh to Trivandrum train via Coimbatore brings job seekers and migrant workers, and it is easy to “vanish” in the crowded industrial and knitwear centres of the hinterland. A labour hungry knitwear industry gobbles up labour. According to KM Subramanian, Tiruppur Exporters Association, “TN textile industry is one of the largest…so illegals head job prospecting head straight to Tiruppur and Karur with fake documents”. About 8 lakh people are employed in the knitwear sector, with 2.5 lakhs from North India. Even 20,000 workers can be absorbed at any given time. The penny dropped with frequent visits of chief Ajit Doval to TN. His latest meeting with Governor RN Ravi has catapulted this security issue to high levels. Is this frequent visit by Doval, a signal that Governor Ravi may get an extension?
Rajinikanth MKStalin
Is Superstar Rajinikanth The Sutradhar In DMK’s Succession Issue?
A weighty book release turned into a stunned arena when Superstar Rajinikanth took the mic to speak and set out a big cat among the pigeons. Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin presided over the book launch Kalaignar Enum Thai penned by his minister E Ve Velu. Rajini was at his punching best. He lauded that CM Stalin had inherited much from his founder father and learnt even more through osmosis. Winning elections was the proof. But Stalin is like a school teacher. He is comfortable with the new crop of youngsters. But 10 or 15 old students are making it hard for Stalin to go ahead with his strategies…mind you these are not “failed” students but entrenched power holders who are working for themselves. Especially an old warrior, Duraimurugan who could take on Kalaignar himself. Pat came Duraimurugan’s reply, “Like old actors with falling teeth and scrawny beards want to keep on acting. Not allowing younger talent to rise”. This old boys club proved to be the roadblock for Stalin to decide on a succession plan…anoint his son Udhayanidhi as deputy CM. Rajini shattered the perception that Udhayanidhi’s ascension was delayed by Stalin.  The obvious inference, on the contrary, the son wants a clear field …an Augean stable pitted with roadblocks and challengers, urgently in need of clearing up. The applause from the cadres was as resounding as Stalin’s response. “Yes, I am aware of all this. I am vigilant and shall act, soon”. TN is now flummoxed….is Rajini, the Sutradar unfolding the play or is Stalin playing puppeteer? Rajini has flung a pebble in the DMK waters…how far will these ripples spread?

Kollywood’s New Trend: Small Budget, Big Impact Movie Wins Praise From Acclaimed Directors
Something very laudable is happening in Kollywood. Acclaimed film director Bala was all praise and laurels for a just released film Vaazhai, directed by Mari Selvaraj which would have easily passed into oblivion, as it has no glitzy stars nor high amp pre- promos. Just a cute story that unfolds and tugs at your heartstrings, the kind of film that the audience relegates as Festival types. A teary-eyed, highly talented director Bala hugged Mari Selvaraj and said, “We are surely and supremely on the road to global acclaim for Tamil cinema and artists”. Ace director Mani Rathnam too praised the film. Result: 60% of the theatre audience have watched this movie due to endorsements by these well-known directors. There is a big sea change happening, and a very essential change in the themes, treatment, cast and most telling in the budget. Sensible producers like Sivakarthikeyan and directors like Vinothraj have touched audience sensibilities that over the top budget and cast do not make a film watchable. Actor Sivakarthikeyan is glowing with pride that his just released Kottukkaali (fresh from its showing at the 74th Berlin Festival) has garnered rave reviews from peers and patrons. Soori, the film’s main protagonist/antagonist has risen like a colossus from his earlier avatar as a comedian, sidekick. Bollywood and its bean counters are sure to be wondering if it is not big money, then what is the secret sauce of such small budget films. Simple themes but powerful storytelling.

Tamil Superstar Vijay All Set To Graduate From Big Screen To Bigger Political Theatre
Come September, Tamil film superstar ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay has positioned his intense leap from films to politics. GOAT is hitting the crazed fans with promos not seen before (it is not Aadujivtham, a goat’s life that got awards). It is Vijay’s penultimate film Greatest of All Time from the house of AGS…much anticipated and hyped. September 5 is D Day.  September 23 Vijay launches his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam with the greatest gathering of eager party cadres at Vikravandi Assembly constituency…a red letter day for him. Vijay is poised to enter the 2026 election arena as a challenger for the Dravidians, BJP – a fourth dimension to churn up the ocean of murky politics. He has already launched the flag and anthem. In case the flag is seen as nondescript Vijay ensured that the Spanish flag with two red borders and a band of yellow was his choice…to make it even more attention catching  it carries the Tamil Sangam period Vagai flower held by two elephants. His political ambitions are clear and present a danger to current equations in Tamil Nadu. Vijay has worked super energetically. Is he hoping to wear the Vagai flower garland of victory like the conquering kings of the Sangam era? GOAT is all set.

Was Khushbu “Na Khush" As Member Of The National Commission For Women?
You can’t keep an ambitious and feisty woman out of power and profile in politics. BJP leader Khushbu Sundar has proved yet again that she is a woman of substance and stature. She had resigned from NCW in July, but her resignation was accepted only on August 14. It is said that certain high powered BJP leaders were on her side to speed up her resignation acceptance. A sparkling, animated and emotional Khushbu sashayed into the BJP TN HQ Kamalalayam on August 15, after one and half years of Vanvas. Khushbu is known to have fought her way through many political upheavals and frustrations, the best recalled ones about her party hopping and stormy encounters with TN heavyweights. Her talent as a brand ambassador is unique…and her fans have built a temple in her name. Her cinematic and small screen status is as intact as her self–confidence. Even today, she commands Rs 10 lakhs per day. But there are personal undercurrents to Khushbu turning Na Khush at this point. Even as she was almost being erased from popular memory, Radhika, her contemporary, had climbed several steps up the BJP pecking order, along with hubby Sarathkumar. Khushbu was acutely aware that her lost public ratings had quickly found a new lady brand in Radhika. At a recent Tiruppur event, Saratkumar was given pride of place on the BJP dais, an event where Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan was not invited. Time for intervention. Like Mamata, Khushbu challenged. Now the game starts. Khela Hobe?

Madras HC Pulls Up Traffic Police Over ‘Unauthorised NO PARKING Sign Boards’ Put Up By Housing Societies
Chennaites are maha vexed with ‘unauthorised’ NO PARKING sign boards put all over the city by house owners and housing societies. These illegal signboards are further reinforced by potted plants and the traffic police seem to overlook it. Every busy neighbourhood …Mylapore, RA Puram, Adyar, T Nagar, Velachari is a nightmare for shoppers and residents, constantly quaking in fear of the vehicles being towed by traffic police. Some famous landmark roads have heightened problems.  A recent Tamil film ‘Parking’ brilliantly captured this misery, won critical and commercial acclaim. The film unfolds the serious confrontation between two tenants, one who buys a car and the other who resents it being parked in front of his house. The pent up anger turns almost lethal. The vexed landlord tells both to vacate, then advertises for a prospect with no vehicles! While Poes Garden accumulated name, fame and status, Gopalapuram, the Agraharam turned Dravida stronghold found its place the year the late Kalaignar turned into its most featured denizen. Many stand-alone bungalows have turned into an apartment complex and NO PARKING signs are prominent on most gates. And the narrow 6th Street, G Puram is chock-a-block with roadside eateries. After J Jayalalithaa passing away, the exclusive Poes Garden entry road is now a jostling parking lot for the college students. The Madras High Court Bench of CJ D Krishnakumar and Justice PB Balaji are hearing a PIL filed by a lawyer CS Nandakumar of Dharmapuri. The Bench has asked the Traffic Police and Chennai Corporation to file a report as to what actions they have taken to remove such unauthorised NO PARKING boards, illegal placing of flowerpots and barricades by housing societies. The irony, hitting the public starkly is this prominent Corporation notice “sidewalks are for walking”.

Pre-Release Jitters For Vikram Starrer ‘Thangalaan’
Ever since this film was announced, Thangalaan, with iconic actor Vikram in the lead, it has garnered media news by the ton. With good reason too…audience still recall KGF and its thrilling story, our very own Mackenna’s Gold. Who wouldn’t be hooked by the thrill of prospecting for gold? Thangalaan is now anticipated as another KGF. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the man who creates stunning visuals even as the hard hitting screenplay unfolds. But suddenly, a scary twist hit the film’s much-awaited release. A Division Bench of the Madras High Court decreed that the producer, KE Gnanavel Raja  and Easwaran, stakeholders of Studio Green deposit Rs 1 crore by August 15 in the account of the official assignee representing the late creditor Arjunlal Sundardas who had pleaded insolvency before he died. Thangalaan faced the oft-repeated speed breaker in films, creditors who are as keen to get the money back as the producer to release his film made with blood, debt and tears.
jyotika
Is Kollywood Star Jyotika Craving For Public Attention?
Kollywood gave her a special place as an artist who bloomed late. When Jyotika starred in her first Tamil film Vaali in 1999, with a plump, almost girl next door look, she was nowhere as well-known as her more trending sister Nagma. But Jyotika did justice to every role and soon emerged as a bankable actor. More than her films, her romantic link with Kollywood heartthrob Suriya were tracked by film buffs. And it finally happened…the movie that starred them as the pivotal pair, Kakka Kaakha whizzed into film annals as one of the most watched and liked. With on screen chemistry crackling, Jyotika and Suriya married in 2006, and father-in-law, thespian Shivakumar and family’s initial fears later transformed into acceptance. Jyotika’s 50th Tamil film Udanpirappe was praised but her box office status seemed to have plateaued. And the need to seek new environs for Suriya and herself became a compulsive need. She moved to Mumbai, her original home, claiming better education for her kids, and more film prospects for the pair. Of course, the murmur of family discord could be heard too. Jyotika it seems wanted to revive her career and relaunch herself and Suriya in Bollywood. Shaitaan, the Hindi horror with Ajay Devgn and Madhavan did not do much for her. But suddenly, and most unwittingly Jyotika, caught the attention of netizens for her dress choice at the Filmfare awards. A group trolled her brutally for showing off her inner wear. Jyotika and her style statement got her the attention she craved. Will film offer flow?

Caught Napping: Has DMK Succeeded In Wooing Women Vote Bank Of AIADMK?
The DMK, it must be acknowledged, has mastered the art of winning voters and influencing segments. Here, TASMAC, a company owned by the Tamil Nadu government, has a monopoly over wholesale and retail vending of alcoholic beverages. And TASMAC keeps the men coming unfailingly to quench their spiritual thirst, simultaneously filling up government coffers. TASMAC revenues keep zooming up every year, an abiding testimony to happy TN men. But the women are an unhappy lot as men save their income for slaking their thirst. And drunken behaviour had its social fallout in ill-treatment of women. But MGR cannily aimed his AIADMK welfare programmes at women, and Jayalalithaa too did likewise. AIADMK now headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) took this women’s loyalty for granted. Not anymore. After humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha EPS has been doing intense stock taking of defeat and strategic run up to 2026 Assembly election. Intense powwow with his core group has thrown up some clues as to why Camelot was lost.  Meanwhile, TN chief minister MK Stalin aims to make women in his state happy, and turn them into devoted vote banks. On 15th of every month Rs 1000 is credited to the homemaker’s account by the TN government. After women, the government is focussing on youth and putting a stop to cash handouts. DMK’s Tamil Nadu Manavar (Student) Thittam Scheme has in one fell blow, the practice of cash out handouts during election time. DMK feels regular open payments from the exchequer is the best incentive for vote bank loyalty. Looks like Stalin and his party came up with creative solutions that have put EPS on the backfoot.

Tamil Film Actor Vishal Addresses The Madras HC Judge As “Boss”!
Tamil film popular star Vishal’s Sandakozhi (Fighter Cock) hit the headlines in 2005, swaying its audience for 210 straight days in cinemas. The pugnacious Vishal gained popularity as a saleable star and was signed up for more films. Soon he started Vishal Film Factory. And parallel to this he also turned bellicose and aggressive for both right and wrong causes. He became the Sandakozhi in his professional life, and has been in the news for many a contentious issue. Vishal also took on Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Distribution house though indirectly as he feared his film Rathnam could be stymied by alleged monopoly and manipulative practices. Sometimes back, he talked about corrupt practices in the Central Board of Film Certification to get his film Mark Antony certified. But now things have hit a churning point. His venture, Vishal Film Factory had borrowed Rs 23 crore from financier GN Anbu Chezhiyan. But then Vishal had a cash flow problem. To bail him out Lyca Productions stepped in and took over his debt with a deal that all future releases would go through Lyca. Vishal allegedly reneged on the deal and Lyca took him to court. Vishal had to appear in the Madras High Court of Her Honour P T Asha on July 29. During the court proceedings, when he declined that he had signed a contract but had signed a blank paper. The Judge shot back, “You were supposed to settle all dues before Sandakozhi2 release. You think it is smart to deny your own signature”? Vishal interrupted the Judge and addressed her… “Boss”. The Judge, already irritated, countered “You can’t use Boss. Just say yes or no”.
dulquer
What Makes Malayalam Star Dulquer Salmaan Unique?
At 41, Dulquer Salmaan has an envious track record of big achievements –MBA from Purdue University, a Dubai stint in IT major, and then quitting this comfort zone to plunge into films to prove that just being legend Mammootty’s son would not put him in the orbit of pan India success. In 2012, when Dulquer wanted to act in films, the easiest thing for him would have been to latch on to the fame, name and star adulation of his father who at 73 continues to rock Malayalam cine world. But Mammootty made it clear that he would not call in any favours. Dulquer proved that he could build his own niche. He instinctively chose pan India films and themes in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam acutely aware that Dad was a hard act to follow in just Kerala cinema. A brilliant strategy that has won him a Filmfare Award and other trophies. Sita Ramam turned out to be both a creative and commercial hit, after his O Kadhal Kanmani (Mani Ratnam directed ) Kannum Kannum Kollai Adithal, King of Kotha, Karwaan and a host of projects that have built his star status, frame by frame. Dulquer runs profitable enterprises, and is brand ambassador too. His passion for bespoke cars is a luxury his star status brings. Recently when someone compared his rise to the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, an embarrassed Dulquer shot back and said please don’t insult Shah Rukh Khan. Not many star progeny have built the kind of sustained following Dulquer has carved out for himself.

Will Puducherry Governor KK Eventually Move To Chennai?
Who is KK? The intriguing initials are bound to be familiar to Gujarat watchers …straight out of a 70s Loin Ajit film. Far from it. Kuniyil Kailashnathan has served as Principal Chief Secretary to three Gujarat CMs –heading that list is Narendra Modi who spotted this talent. KK could translate every strategy into actionable plans, becoming a by word in bureaucracy. Strange why there is no research that most powerful bureaucrats are by far Southies? A Keralite by birth, he grew up in Ooty, graduated from the Madras University and worked as a Professor before cracking the IAS in 1979, zooming up in the power ladder. Now aged 71, he enjoyed a 12 years extension in Gujarat before opting out …and to be appointed as the 25th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s term gets over and he has met with both the PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah seeking an extension. Governor Ravi, a former Intel chief has made history as a major irritant to DMK. The buzz is that KK is an interim red herring to lull all concerned; will be moved eventually into the Chennai Raj Bhavan closer to 2026 Assembly elections? KK is fluent in Tamil and may take this talent to a higher level as a foxy bureaucrat. DMK in full prep mode for 2026 cannot let its guard down.

Tamil Film Popular Star Dhanush No Longer ‘The Grey Man’
Just before the release of his own Rs 100-crore budget directorial film Raayan, Tamil film popular star Dhanush went through pre-release agony of doubt and fear… he needn’t have.  The crowds exiting cinemas were full of praise and admiration…for not just his direction, but the gracious way of projecting every actor in his or her true worth, not casting himself in every frame, using the ultraviolent action theme to effectively convey the blood and gore story….all in his favour as director. On X, a fan tweeted “A Badshah for Dhanush” (putting him on par with Rajinikanth hit Badshah). With the release of Raayan the debate in Kollywood has now graduated to Dhanush’s directorial skill? Will he plunge full-fledged into direction or manage both acting and direction? His confidence in directing actors like Prakashraj, Kalidas Jayaram, SJ Surya and Sandeep is now evident that he is capable of 50 shades of Grey. Starting off as an average looker and hesitant actor in 2002 in Thulluvadho Ilamai, taking on a variety of films and roles in 23 years, Dhanush has pitched his talent tent, in the right spot, capably. Of course he has gathered much moss and unsavoury baggage in his rise…as star, superstars damaad, family discord, competitive strife with Sivakarthikeyan, media overdrive on so-called dalliance with co-stars. Dhanush who acted in the Hollywood The Grey Man is no longer the Grey Man…He is Atrangi Re.

When It Comes To Business, Dravidian Puts Brahmin On Pedestal
In Tamil Nadu, the month of Aadi (sacred month between Jul 17 and Aug 16) holds a distinct hysterical attraction for both buyers and sellers. Retailers advertise the most attractive discounts and buyers just cannot resist those drool worthy offers. But why Aadi month? For those familiar with religion and rituals, Aadi is not an auspicious time for weddings and family events. You may be surprised to know that newly-weds are not encouraged to cohabit ….a strange social custom with strong roots in superstition. Yet, Aadi is considered super auspicious for staunch devotion. Every day in the Tamil calendar has a deep religious significance. How did retail hysteria find its place in Aadi? Business and religion have coexisted profitably for ages…as religion has enabled the need to buy numerous products to appease the Gods, especially Ma Durga …offering dozens of glass bangles and sarees to the Goddess, simultaneously gifting to women devotees churning up demand for gifts galore that are sold at irresistible prices. Retailers are happy when the crowds stampede. Buyers use this opportunity of rock bottom prices to stock up for future gifting, weddings and events. Results: inventory flies out. The iconic store Chennai Silks opened Aadi sales this year with its full page ad featuring a “madisar model” draped in a nine yards saree. Religion, business and politics mesh here…the Dravidian ideology though consistently mocking Brahmin culture, is not averse to borrowing symbols of this culture to boost business. Ideology, religion, business everything has its place.

Is Kollywood On A Pick-Me-Up Spate Of Strong Films And Super Heroes?
Tamil film fans are on a high …just salivating in anticipation of a star cine line-up. Keenly awaited is Lyca Productions’ thriller Vidaamuyarchi with Ajit and Trisha swinging to Anirudh’s merry music under Magizh Thirumeni’s direction. The news about Trisha taking on the director for some obscure issue and other roadblocks put the fear about Vidaamuyarchi becoming Vitta Muyarchi or effort abandoned. But all is well and Diwali is to be lit up by this film. Thangalan, the much talked about Kolar Gold Mines is a film that may take veteran Vikram to new heights in acting. This film, directed by PA Ranjit with music by GV Prakashkumar will be released on August 15. The very first song Minikki Minikki is already a hit for its rural beat, rustic voice and lyrics. Thangalan to be released worldwide in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi is predicted to be a creative and cash hit on the lines of KGF and RRR. Dhanush and his 50th film Rayan with a promising story and solid acting line up — Selvaraghavan, SJ Surya, Kalidas and Aparna Balamurali. AR Rahman has tuned the lyrics written by Dhanush with SUN Pictures gearing up for July 26 show time. Suriya’s Ganguva in 3D tech, directed by Siruthai Siva with Disha Patani, Bobby Deol and others is an epic historical film that has been long delayed. No wonder Suriya announced its Fire Song to be out on his 49th birthday on July 23 to keep interest alive in Ganguva. There are several small budget modest films too. Who can predict which of these films will grab audience attention?

Will Ram Charan Starrer Be A ‘Game Changer’ For Director Shankar?
Even in an almost cameo role of Kamal Haasan in Kalki 2898 AD, it raked in the money and the laurels. But his full length sequel epic  Indian 2 has turned into an embarrassment for all concerned –  director S Shankar, Lyca Productions, Red Giant and cast. Hit in the solar plexus by a super long film that begs to be ignored. Especially brilliant director Shankar who has had many hits in his quiver and a reputation for big scale entertainment. In the high jinx, big money world of cinema many hits are quickly memory erased with one super flop. That’s exactly what has happened to wizard Shankar. But the long gestation period of Indian 2 brought an opportunity for him to sign up Ram Charan (fresh from the laurels of RRR and its near Oscar status) for directing Game Changer. Even as Telugu distributors, financiers and producers are shell shocked by the Indian 2 debacle, they have to scan the sky, hopefully for that rainbow. And appropriately enough it could be Game Changer with the suave Ram Charan. The political thriller written by Kartik Subburaj, features Kiara Advani, SJ Surya, Anjali and others. Ram Charan shared a collage of a helicopter that said, “The Game is about to Change … .Game Changer is all wrapped up. See you at the cinemas.” Cinema is mega money …it needs back to back game changers to survive.

EPS In A Dilemma, To Forgive Or Forget Sasikala
AIADMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) is a troubled man after the rout of his party in the Lok Sabha election. His stubborn resolve to “no alliance” with BJP is being blamed by many of his apparatchiks, and with the imminent run up to the 2026 Assembly elections, EPS is now tailgated and pressurised to take back the prodigals O Panneerselvam and VK Sasikala (Chinnamma). A chintan baithak held for brainstorming brought this demand to the fore. According to OS Manian, former party minister, the most crucial strategy is to knit a strong alliance under the AIADMK leadership like the DMK alliance. Leaks of unhappiness from VCK and Marxist Communist in the DMK combine are evident …why not break this bond? The Muukkulathor community in the southern districts form a big block of voters and they think Sasikala with 33 years of association with J Jayalalithaa will revive the charisma. OPS surprisingly won 3 lakh votes in his alliance perch with the BJP. So voices are now vehement about uniting the party to its old glory. EPS has a strong “No” to OPS but is silent on Chinammaa’s entry. With such overpowering arguments for and against restoring the status quo ante, no wonder EPS is confused and confounded. Sasikala who had announced in 2021 she was taking a political Sanyas has suddenly abandoned her sanyasi garb, put on her political makeup and announced a tour of TN in the holy month of Aadi.

Lady Super Star Nayanthara To Don Divine Avatar ‘Mookkuthi Amman’, Again
Sequels seem to be the current flavour of Tamil films. Even as Indian 2 is chugging along to mixed reactions, Ishari Ganesh and his production House Vel’s, announced the sequel to their 2020  fantasy mythology/ comedy ( new genres are creatively spun ) Mookkuthi Amman. Lady Superstar Nayanthara plays the Goddess. How did a fantasy theme steeped in Divine overtones inspire a sequel? The ways of films and the preferences of audiences are as elusive as The Scarlet Pimpernel. The first film Mookkuthi Amman could not get a cinema release due to Covid-19 pandemic. But the makers were not daunted …they managed a direct OTT release on Disney Hotstar, almost convinced it was due to the divine blessings of Goddess Amman. A beautiful Nayanthara got iconic welcome as the Nose Pin Goddess. RJ Balaji, the main character is also the director of the film. Mookkuthi Amman watches over the good people with her timely interventions and is lionised as the family “go to” deity.  When story boards are as dry as a desert, film makers seek sequels — at least the essentials for the film are charted. Only a new story twist is needed. Nayanathara is an appropriate Mookkuthi Amman.

Editor’s Note: Big Punch In Small Pack

It is the Third Anniversary of Short Post and as a news media startup launched during the Covid-19 pandemic it certainly feels better than good to find ourselves where we are today. Here, I must cite the unstinted support of our seasoned contributors, all senior editors in the country, who brought a great degree of maturity and sagacity to the Short Post newsroom. But for them, our tagline “Authentic Gossip”, an Oxymoron, would not have matured viably. Our user numbers may be small but our stories have created the desired impact among people who matter — decision makers and influencers. We offer a big punch in a small pack and Short Post with its 225-word stories has been punching above its weight category. Having posted close to 3,000 stories in the last 36 months, Short Post, I feel, is an idea whose time has come.
And this is vindicated by our two marquee advertisers – IDFC FIRST Bank and ICICI Lombard. Both believed in our story and have supported us from Day one. A big thank you to both.
If you look at the media landscape – print, TV and digital — it is a mixed bag. There are job losses as some outfits have closed down while a lucky few were bailed out by large corporate houses. Yes, there is a lot of action in the digital space. However, the entry of corporate houses has raised the question of independence of news media outfits. Sadly, there are just a handful of independent media outfits in the country that are highly respected for their neutrality. At Short Post, our credo is not to take sides, prejudge issues or be biased but, informing readers of behind-the-scenes happenings. In essence, Short Post strives to be a neutral editorial platform — neither anti-establishment nor pro-establishment.
As I said last year, disruptions in the media world are moving at a fast and furious pace. Technology is playing a very big role in how content is generated and consumed. But, we are neither alarmed nor perturbed as it is all a part of the evolution process. What gives us comfort is that AI is unable to create original gossipy content. And that is the news arena where we have achieved a distinction.
