Model Code Of Conduct Proves Irksome To Tamil Nadu Govt

Tamil Nadu was the first State to go to the polls for all 39 seats on the very first day of the Lok Sabha elections of 2024. While getting the polls out of the way seemed a good idea and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin could even go on a holiday to a hill station where he could take over a whole luxury resort for self, family and doctors, the fact that the model code of conduct is in place till June 4 is proving irksome. The Chief Minister was keen to make a splash with newspaper advertisements to mark his government’s third anniversary on May 7, but the Election Commission came down on it and stopped the ads. Steering clear of any controversy building up over any policy announcements by him, the CM left it to the IAS officers to make the announcements on small policy issues. He did, however, make a personal statement on his government’s achievements, with pride on the breakfast scheme in schools taking off and earning praise from India and abroad and the free bus scheme for women that has helped many domestic aides and casual workers to move around easily to their work spots while saving money. The CM would still like to make a public celebration of three years of running the government smoothly enough with media advertisements to come out on June 5 morning after the model code of conduct expires.
