The $ 10 billion Indian Premier League (IPL) will get off the ground at the good old Chepauk on Friday (Mar 22). And it’s a no-brainer that attention will bolt down on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli who has not faced a ball in a competition after the second innings of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town, which means he will be facing a Chennai Super Kings bowler in the Tata IPL-17 lung opener after a 77-day break from the game. Virat has played 237 matches (229 innings) and scored 7263 runs — the highest in the League — but he and his fans are yet to see RCB lift the trophy. Now the RCB men can only be second best to its women’s team that cracked the code to win the WPL! Last year, Virat (he doesn’t like being hailed as King Kohli) scored 639 runs with 2x100s. The champion batter has shown loyalty to the franchise bought in 2008 for $ 111.6 million, owned by United Spirits Ltd, a Diageo Group company. The cricketing world, especially India’s selection committee chaired by Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma and Head Coach Rahul Dravid will be keen to see how Virat shapes up in the league. Virat is a big brand which will be present at the ICC Men’s Twenty 20 to be exhibited in New York, Florida and Texas, apart from Caribbean venues. The interest will be around how the champion is hitting the ball!
