Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s Son-Grandson Plan ‘Legacy Tour’ To The UK

The legacy of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, one of the greatest Hindustani classical vocalists, is being kept alive by his son Shrinivas and grandson Viraj not only in India but also globally. Shrinivas-Viraj, the father-son duo is set to regale the audience in the UK in May. Here, they will be accompanied by Prof Vijay Singh Rajput, a disciple of Panditji, who teaches music at the New Castle University, England. The trio will perform in various cities in the UK including London, Manchester, and at Durham University. Organised by socio cultural organisation VOICE, the trio will be accompanied by Rajput’s son Jay on vocal and tanpura, tabla maestro Saleel Tambe and Siddhiee Kapshikar on harmonium who recently entered the Guinness Book of World Records. The 58-year-old Shrinivas who did his BTech from IIT Delhi also belongs to the Kirana gharana like his father. Shrinivas and Viraj regularly perform at the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival. He has released an album called Swarakruti which is based on his father’s music and personality. Viraj, in his early 20s, has adapted his singing to the alap-jod-jhala style to synchronize with the traditional Indian classical instrumental approach. Viraj began his musical journey learning the table and later trained under his father.  He is the recipient of Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi fellowship. The legacy tour will present the all-time favourite bhajans and abhangs of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. The legacy tour will certainly enthral Hindustani classical and light music aficionados.
