The familiar image of Mohan Charan Majhi being an honest simple tribal chief minister of Odisha does not fly any more. His performance scorecard is slipping and he has a lot of catching up to do in respect of promise versus performance. Sources say he is missing in the areas of swift action covering many disciplines namely, revenue earnings, central grants, addressing local inflation concerns, commanding leadership, quick deliverance and service to the people as yet.. Majhi, it is learnt, has realised his shortcomings. This explains why he has warned government officers to shape up or face dismissal recently. Political commentator Ruben Banerjee says Majhi is under pressure to deliver results. According to Banerjee, during Naveen Patnaik’s BJD regime the Odisha government’s tax collection had increased by over 16.91% in 2024-25 but under BJP rule it has increased by only 3.65%. In respect to minerals and mines revenue, BJD had increased it by 29.37% in 2023-2024 but this year 2024-25 under Majhi government the revenue is down by -3.66%. There is a perception that the Odisha government earns a decent sum via mining activities but it does not seem currently. During BJD’s rule in 2023-24 it had increased by 19.67% but under BJP in 2024-25 it is minus -9.69 %. Likewise, revenue collection from iron ore mines has also dropped.
