Jasprit Bumrah: Climbing The Leadership Ladder, Future India Captain

Given a role in the leadership hierarchy of the Indian team, Jasprit Bumrah has earned further recognition of his talent displayed over a period of time. India’s premier fast bowler in the three formats has demonstrated not just his skill to operate with the ball, but also to take responsibility when the chips are down. Some years ago former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that soaking into pressure should be ingrained in the player and seen as a  responsibility and Bumrah — who has not led Gujarat even once in the Ranji Trophy — has exemplified  this trait more often than not. The most prominent was in the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town in the first week of January 2024 when he dismantled the home team; the outcome of which was a match winning 6 for 61. India levelled the series after going down at the Centurion and after Mohammed Siraj’s fantastic 6 for 15 beneath the Table Mountain at Newlands.  Bumrah has been the game-changer since the tour to England in 2022. He took 23 on that tour, followed by 12 in South Africa, 10 against Sri Lanka in India, 12 against South Africa in South Africa, 19 against England in India and 11 against Bangladesh in India. A back ailment put him out of action against Australia at home. His 87 scalps in the last six series bears testimony to his supreme bowling efforts. Two years ago he led India at Edgbaston, but with his appointment as vice- captain for the home series against New Zealand the selectors are looking at him as a future India captain.
