Maharashtra’s Top Wrestler Sikandar Shaikh’s Arrest In Arms Case Shocks Sports World

Internationally famous wrestler Sikandar Shaikh’s arrest by the Punjab Police in connection with an interstate arms smuggling network has shocked sports circles in Maharashtra. Initial investigations reportedly suggest his alleged ties with the notorious Papla Gujjar gang, which has been under scrutiny for supplying illegal firearms to various regions. Shaikh shot to fame in 2004 after winning the prestigious ‘Maharashtra Kesari’ title, the state’s award for the topmost wrestler. Shaikh’s father was a labourer. Hence, his success had earned him universal accolades. Originally from Mohol taluka in Solapur district, Shaikh grabbed attention of the sports arena following his one spectacular win after another in conventional wrestling bouts. Shaikh and four others were arrested at Mohali in Punjab while allegedly transporting arms in a vehicle. His family and well-wishers have refuted the charges. The police party recovered a cash amount of Rs 1.99 lakh, five pistols, cartridges and the two vehicles. An ace wrestler, Shaikh has been residing in Punjab for the past several months, those who know him say. According to another acquaintance, Sikandar wins almost all the bouts and his annual income is rumoured to be around Rs 5 crore. So far, he has been presented with a dozen SUVs, around 10 Bullet motorcycles and 40 buffaloes as prizes. Hence, his alleged involvement in such a crime is laughable, retort his supporters.
