2011 World Cup Star Gautam Gambhir Is Set To Retake Centre Stage!

Has Gautam Gambhir – foreseen to take the mantle of Head Coach of the Indian team from Rahul Dravid post the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup — been given his due for India’s 2011 World Cup title win?  While the fans and the cricketing fraternity doffed their hat to a brave, heart-like knock played by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the stoical display by Gambhir after Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag’s early exit in the final against Sri Lanka has not been acclaimed enough. Yuvraj Singh’s all-round showing during the World Cup campaign has also been talked about off and on, but hardly Gambhir’s doughty 122-ball 97 in the final at the Wankhede Stadium. The Delhi left-hander kept India in the hunt for three hours and seven minutes and, in the course of it, forged an 83-run stand with Virat Kohli for the third wicket. Gambhir’s steadfast knock was the high point of India retrieving lost ground after the Lasith Malinga blows that ejected Sehwag and Tendulkar from the middle. Gambhir’s scores in the World Cup were 39, 51, 10, 28, 69, 22, 50, 27 and 97 for a tally of 393 in nine innings. He has scored 10324 runs for India in 242 matches/283 innings across the three formats and was part of the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup-winning Indian team. Gambhir has the credentials to play the role his predecessors like Dravid, Ravi Shastri, and Anil Kumble have done with great zeal. His return to play a proactive role in cricket upon quitting politics and showing the way for Kolkata Knight Riders to win its third IPL title has opened the door of the Indian team for him!
